Following His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama’s historic address before a Special Convention of the California State Legislature, Senator Janet Nguyen is calling on all Californians to echo His Holiness' message of kindness by performing random acts of kindness.
After meeting in 2015, Senator Janet Nguyen extended an official invitation to His Holiness to join her in Sacramento to share his message with both houses of the legislature and the residents of California at large. His Holiness accepted the invitation and Senator Nguyen worked with legislative leaders Senate Pro Tem Kevin De Leon and Speaker of the Assembly Anthony Rendon to arrange His Holiness’ appearance and a private luncheon attended by Senator Nguyen, Governor Jerry Brown and both house leaders.
Before leading the effort to bring His Holiness to the State Legislature, Senator Janet Nguyen was inspired by His Holiness’ 2015 visit to Orange County and authored a resolution designating the month of July 2015 as "Kindness Month" in the State of California. To celebrate this resolution and to promote kindness, Senator Nguyen subsequently launched #KindCalifornia to promote selflessness and encourage compassion by asking Californians to perform one or more random acts of kindness.
"What I have come to learn from His Holiness is that kindness comes in many forms, it can be as simple as saying thank you or lending a helping hand to someone in need, the goal is to spread kindness,” said Senator Janet Nguyen.
In honor of World Kindness Day, Senator Nguyen also announced plans to host a #KindCalifornia event at the Orange County Food Bank in November 2016. Last year’s #KindCalifornia event welcomed one hundred and fifty volunteers of all ages who packed food for needy children and families, while others collected canned food donations. By the end of the two-hour event, volunteers had packed over 40,000 pounds of food to serve more than 2,000 households.
Before heading to Sacramento, Senator Janet Nguyen had the honor of spending some time with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Orange County where she provided him with an update on her efforts to promote kindness and where His Holiness signed a #KindCalifornia banner.
“This November, I am proud to present another opportunity to showcase the generosity that lives in the hearts of all Californians by hosting another #KindCalifornia event at the Orange County Food Bank," said Senator Janet Nguyen. “I welcome all volunteers and invite you to call my office for more information.”
